Give a unique, meaningful gift this festive season
The Colchester Museums Development Foundation (CMDF) is thrilled to announce its participation in Giving Tuesday, the Global Day of Generosity, on Tuesday, 3 December 2024.

This annual event, organised by the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, encourages people to take time to reflect, spread kindness, and give back in ways that resonate with them. From donating to a favourite charity, volunteering locally, or lending a hand to a friend or neighbour, there are countless ways to get involved and help make a difference.

CMDF plays a vital role in supporting Colchester Museums as they work to preserve, explore, and share the town's rich history with the community. In celebration of Giving Tuesday, CMDF is once again promoting its “Adopt an Object” scheme, inviting individuals to support Colchester’s heritage in a unique way.

Colchester Museums' curators have chosen some of the most rare and intriguing objects in their collections – including a Fruity Figurine, lemming, and even a curious Penis Pot – that can be symbolically adopted. Each of these objects, selected from Colchester’s collections and local excavations, has a story to tell about the town’s past.

Adoption makes a thoughtful gift for history lovers, friends, family, or even as a gift to yourself. Adopting an object is simple: select an artefact, add your recipient’s details, and check out online with ease. With the festive season approaching, this is a gift that’s both convenient and deeply meaningful.

Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage, and Public Protection said: “Every adopted object helps CMDF broaden the impact of Colchester Museums in our community. From accessible events and new research initiatives to work ensuring our collections are as inclusive as possible, adopters will contribute directly to preserving Colchester’s heritage for generations to come.”
Join us this Giving Tuesday and throughout December to embrace the spirit of generosity and become part of Colchester’s legacy.
