Colchester City Council is dedicated to supporting Colchester Foodbank (CF) in its vital mission to combat food insecurity in the community. Recognising the urgent need for a new location to sustain and expand its operations, the council has been actively working with Colchester Foodbank since March 2024, providing practical assistance, guidance, and advocacy to help secure a site that meets the needs of this essential service.
This ongoing support has included regular communication through meetings, calls, and emails to ensure the Foodbank receives timely advice and resources. The council has recommended some estate agents and introduced Colchester Foodbank to some community partners who may have suitable premises, while also offering informal planning advice to help navigate potential site options on potential buildings/properties. Additionally, the council’s business rates team has provided expertise on available discounts, and its communications team has assisted with raising awareness to highlight its urgent appeal.
The council has also facilitated introductions to organisations such as Active Essex, and Essex Community Foundation, broadening the foodbank’s network of potential supporters and partners. Furthermore, the council’s estates team has arranged a viewing of a possible site, a property at Haven Road, to explore viable options.
Recognising the challenges of finding a site that balances space, accessibility, and affordability, the council is calling on the community and local property owners to come forward with any potential opportunities. The foodbank’s continued operation is vital to the wellbeing of countless residents, and the council remains committed to helping secure its future.
Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage, and Public Protection, said: “We understand the critical role Colchester Foodbank plays in our community and remain committed to helping them find a permanent home that meets their operational needs. We are working closely with the foodbank and community partners to ensure they can continue serving the thousands of families who rely on their services.
“Colchester Foodbank is a lifeline for our residents, and its continued operation is essential. We urge anyone with suitable premises to reach out and be part of this vital mission.”
Armin Lange and Nikki Ranson, Colchester Foodbank Co-Directors, said: “We are deeply grateful to Colchester City Council for their unwavering support in our journey to find a new home for Colchester Food Bank. Their invaluable guidance and dedication to our cause have not only helped us navigate some of this challenging process but have also strengthened our partnership. Together, we are making strides to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry, and we look forward to the continued support and growth of this vital collaboration.”
