Colchester Events and Stage Right Productions are proud to announce that local actor Joseph Rawlings will take on the lead role of Shrek in this year’s magical production of Shrek the Musical at Charter Hall, Colchester.

Trained at East 15 acting school and Goldsmiths, University of London, Joseph has built a strong reputation on the regional theatre circuit, known for his versatility, warmth, and commanding stage presence. This marks a major homecoming for Joseph, who has performed in and around Colchester for over a decade.

Joseph’s extensive theatre credits include recent roles in God of Carnage (Gallery Players), a Christmas Carol (Christmas Carol Experience Ltd and Minty Spectre), Poop Poop! and Treasure Island (Minty Spectre), Snow White in the Woods (Alfresco Theatre), and multiple productions with Castle Park Theatre, including Ben Hur, The Haywain, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

On screen and in audio, he has voiced multiple characters in Isolation Alan (15-part audio drama) and narrated the audiobook Cold Sunflowers (Audible). He also performed in Essex Green Day at the Mercury Theatre and released a musical narration of a Christmas Carol on Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music.

Joseph Rawlings said: “It’s a real honour to step into the (big) boots of Shrek – especially in my hometown. I’ve watched amazing productions at Charter Hall over the years, and to now lead this one is incredibly exciting. I can’t wait to bring this story to life for audiences in Colchester.”

Joseph joins a fantastic cast that includes Danny John-Jules (Red Dwarf, Death in Paradise) as Donkey, Rachel Jerram as Princess Fiona, and Chris Edgerley as Lord Farquaad.

Choreography is led by international award-winning talent Adam Scown, whose career highlights include the Glasgow 2014 commonwealth games closing ceremony and performances across Europe, Asia, and the UK.

Following the sell-out success of Elf the Musical, which welcomed over 21,500 audience members in 2024, Shrek the Musical is set to be Colchester’s biggest festive show yet.
