Cyclists using Colchester Town railway station now have access to secure cycle storage, thanks to four new lockers installed by Spokesafe in partnership with Colchester City Council.
The new storage lockers provide a safer and more convenient option for rail users who cycle to the station, as well as those that use the town centre.
The initiative has been made possible through a £20,000 grant from Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund, which supports projects that enhance community benefits and strengthen rail’s role in society.
The booking and opening/closing of the secure cycle lockers are accessed via Spokesafe’s mobile app, ensuring simple and safe storage.
Spokesafe will also oversee ongoing maintenance to keep the facility in top condition, as well as provide 24/7 customer support.
Customers will be able to access the secure storage at a cost of £1 per day, £5 per week or £10 per month.

"The new facility will not only help to provide greater security for cyclists, but it will help to encourage more people to travel more sustainably by bike and public transport to help reduce congestion on the roads and improve the quality of the air we breathe.”
Cllr Andrea Luxford Vaughan, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Planning, and Sustainability at Colchester City Council, said: “Encouraging more people to cycle is a key part of our sustainability goals, and providing secure storage at Colchester Town station makes cycling a more viable option for commuters as well as those visiting the city centre.
“We’re delighted to work with Spokesafe and Greater Anglia to offer a facility that promotes active travel while keeping bikes safe.”

“Booking secure cycle parking should be as simple as booking your train - and now cyclists both in Colchester and beyond can book a secure space in advance of their visit via the Spokesafe app.
“This builds on the success of Colchester’s Secure Bike Park, and we’re excited to play our part in helping more of the local community cycle more often."
The project is one of two schemes around the Colchester area being funded by the Customer and Community Improvement Fund, with new signage and artwork to show the way from Colchester station to the General Hospital also underway.
During 2024/25, the Greater Anglia fund gave a wide range of businesses and organisations a slice of £350,000 to improve the community and society on and around its network.
