Following the recent news about Cineworld’s financial issues, Colchester City Council is pleased to announce that interest in the Colchester Leisure Park remains strong, with four new cinema providers expressing interest. The council had been aware of Cineworld’s situation for some time and was prepared to engage with new providers. Since Cineworld’s withdrawal, there has been significant interest from potential tenants for both the cinema site and other vacant units at the park.
The council is actively engaging with several cinema operators and is optimistic about securing a new provider in time for the expected resurgence in cinema attendance by Summer 2025, driven by a strong lineup of anticipated blockbuster releases.
While some restaurants have delayed their fit-outs due to the uncertainty surrounding the cinema site, they remain fully committed to opening at Colchester Leisure Park. Taste of Italy has confirmed its commitment and is expected to open before Christmas, reflecting the ongoing interest and momentum at the park.
Cllr Mark Cory, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: “The level of interest in the Northern Gateway site over the last few weeks has been very promising. I remain confident that, with the Cineworld issues behind us, we can deliver an excellent destination for entertainment, leisure, and dining at Colchester Leisure Park.
He added: “The UK economy has been struggling, and the cinema sector has been further impacted by Covid-19 and subsequent industry strikes. It has also been a tough time for councils, as we no longer receive any revenue funding from Government. Projects like this not only bring fantastic entertainment options for our residents but also create jobs for the local economy and much-needed income to help balance the books. The commercial world can be risky, but we’re hopeful that this investment in Colchester will soon pay off. With new cinema operators on the horizon, we’re on track to make the park an even better destination for families and visitors.”
As plans continue to develop, the council will keep the public informed with further tenant announcements and updates on the park’s progress.
