Hythe Task Force progress on Haven Road flood prevention efforts

The Hythe Task Force met on 12 September to discuss the ongoing efforts to address long-standing flooding issues on Haven Road.

Flooding caused by tidal water ingress from the River Colne remains a key challenge. The Task Force heard that a long planned and vital water outlet valve replacement needs a new design or location given a misaligned surface water sewer.  Results of a new survey are expected in the coming days, with hopes that valve installation can take place by early November.

The Task Force agreed work should continue to map and understand other causes of surface water flooding in the area and to explore nature-based responses.  One key project, to increase the capacity of Blythe Pond to handle more rainwater during storms. An ecological survey has been completed, and discussions are now underway with Essex County Council to secure funding for the necessary work.

Members of the Task Force were also updated on the progress of repairs at Fieldgate Quay, where the first phase of the project is focused on reinforcing a 15-metre section of the quayside wall. This work, expected to be completed by mid-November, is aimed at stabilising the riverbank and restoring safe public access to the area.

Phase 2, a much larger project involving the repair of a 235-metre section of the quay and the reinstatement of the Essex Highways footpath, is planned to start in spring 2025. The Task Force is awaiting results from recent surveys before finalising designs and securing the necessary permissions.

In response to concerns about road safety and disruption, new flood warning signs and sensors are to be installed on Haven Road to alert drivers during flood events. Essex Highways has completed utility surveys, and signage has been ordered.  The Task Force will provide an update when the installation dates are confirmed.

Chairman of the Task Force, Cllr David King, said: “It is frustrating that we’ve had technical challenges and unexpected findings that have required additional surveys and design adjustments, but I hope we will see tangible progress soon.

“My thanks to local councillors and our partners for their continued commitment and hard work. This is a complex, multi-agency effort, and we need everyone to keep playing their part to make sure we deliver solutions that will benefit the entire community.”
