Essex Pedal Power Colchester proudly celebrates its first anniversary, marking a year of transformative impact on the local community.
Launched with the goal of promoting healthier lifestyles, fostering community connections, and improving overall well-being, the project has exceeded all expectations in its inaugural year. Since its inception, Essex Pedal Power Colchester has distributed 495 bikes to individuals in the Greenstead area, providing them with a sustainable and enjoyable means of transportation.
In addition to bike distribution, the project has placed a strong emphasis on safety and skill development. Over the past year, 120 bike training sessions, including 9 led rides, have been conducted, empowering 417 participants to ride confidently and safely. These sessions have been instrumental in building a community of knowledgeable and responsible cyclists who are now more connected to their environment and each other.
The positive impact of the Essex Pedal Power Project extends beyond just physical activity. By encouraging people to cycle, the project has fostered social interaction and strengthened community bonds.
Zara, one of the project recipients, is going to the London to Brighton Cycle Ride 2024 on 15 September, cycling 55 miles with her Essex Pedal Power bike alongside her friend Ellie, to raise funds for a charity. Zara’s last bike was stolen during COVID, which left her reluctant to invest in another one. When Essex Pedal Power came along, she applied immediately and was grateful to receive a bike and rediscover her love for cycling. Having the Essex Pedal Power bike helped her build confidence and decided to join the cycling event to fundraise for a charity, seeing it as a great way to give back to the community. Rishi, another project recipient, received his Essex Pedal Power bike and began riding it in June 2023. He uses the bike for both commuting and leisure, and through cycling, he has met many new friends and connected with communities from different cultures.
Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage, and Public Protection said: “We are thrilled to see how the Essex Pedal Power Colchester project has become a catalyst for positive change in our community. These bikes have not only reduced carbon footprints but have also brought a sense of freedom and mobility to residents, enabling them to explore their surroundings and engage more with their neighbours. The stories of people reconnecting with their neighbourhoods, improving their well-being, and simply enjoying the joy of cycling have been truly inspiring.”
Essex Pedal Power is part of the wider work within the Heart of Greenstead Scheme, a Town Deal funded project that aims to provide improvements and opportunities to the area of Greenstead, making it a great place to live and work.
