Recent efforts by Colchester City Council, working with key partners, have seen multiple areas targeted to tackle antisocial behaviour (ASB), conduct street and road clean-ups, and engage with the public.
Through a series of ongoing days of action and other targeted activity over the past two months Colchester City Council, working with partners, has:
- Assisted Police patrols, referrals, and an arrest for failing to appear at court
- Assisted intoxicated members of the public with the help of the SOS Bus
- Issued several penalty charge notices (PCN) for parking contraventions
- Issued eighty fixed penalty notices (FPN) to vehicles that breached the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) at Severalls Industrial Estate
- Cleared more than 520kg of litter from the A12
- Searched, cleared, and fined those responsible for multiple fly tips
On 6 June, Colchester City Council wardens, accompanied by volunteers, focused on the Colchester Leisure World Skate Park. Their hard work enhanced the park's environment by litter picking, repainting, and clearing overgrown greenery and engaging with local park users. These efforts make it a more welcoming and safer place for the community, and in turn reduces ASB.
A successful Night of Action was also held in Colchester High Street on Thursday, 20 June, where Colchester City Council’s Community Safety and Neighbourhood Service officers worked together with the Police, North Essex Parking Partnership, Open Road, and the SOS Bus to target ASB and help and provide reassurance to the public.
More recently, the A12 was once again tackled to reduce litter on the busy road, with staff making use of overnight road closures on the Marks Tey exit and entry slip roads, as well as the Stanway exit slip road, to collect a huge amount of litter.

Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage and Public Protection, said: “Our Neighbourhoods and Community Safety Teams work closely with Essex Police and key partners across the city on proactive projects to educate young people, run multi-agency joint patrols, all helping to reduce the number of antisocial behaviour incidents and assist those in need.
“Collaboration with partners and our focus on reducing antisocial behaviour is always a top priority, with our multiple days of action throughout the year cementing our commitment to tackling ASB in Colchester.”
Cllr Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhood Services and Leisure, added: “Addressing attitudes around littering is one of the council’s main priorities. As well as helping to clean local areas, it also helps raise awareness to discourage littering in the first place.
“These two elements reflect both our community and our individual responsibilities. The council and its partners will continue to work hard to change attitudes and reduce littering.”
The council will continue to hold regular action days to tackle ASB and street problems. Residents can report ASB online here, or contact Essex Police on 999 (in an emergency) or 101 (for a non-emergency).
Residents can report street problems including litter, graffiti, fly-tipping and dog fouling here.
