Two of Colchester’s most popular green spaces have once again been recognised as among the best in the country, after being awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award for 2025.
Castle Park and High Woods Country Park have both retained their Green Flag status – the international quality mark for parks and green spaces. The awards recognise these spaces as safe, welcoming and well-managed, offering excellent facilities and supporting the health and wellbeing of residents and visitors.
Castle Park has also once again received a Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, in recognition of its care for and promotion of the park’s historic features.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, is now in its third decade and continues to set the benchmark for well-managed parks across the UK and around the world. This year, Colchester’s award-winning sites are among more than 2,250 parks and green spaces across the UK to receive the prestigious accolade.
Cllr Martin Goss, Colchester City Council Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Castle Park and High Woods Country Park have retained their Green Flag Awards. These spaces are so important to our residents and visitors – providing places for exercise, relaxation and connection with nature.
“This recognition is a testament to the continued hard work and dedication of our Parks and Countryside Team, volunteers and partners, who help to keep these spaces beautiful and welcoming all year round.”
Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in Castle Park and High Woods Country Park. These awards reflect the care and commitment that goes into maintaining these wonderful spaces. Quality green spaces like these are essential for the wellbeing of our communities, offering safe, free places for families to enjoy nature, especially during the ongoing cost of living challenges.”
