£20,500 funding received for advanced CCTV camera

Colchester City Council has received £20,500 from the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (PFCC) to fund the purchase and installation of an additional CCTV camera on North Station Road.

The funding is part of the PFCC’s Safer Streets programme, which supports projects aimed at improving community safety across Essex. Since 2022, Colchester has received over £1 million through this initiative, helping to tackle antisocial behaviour and support projects such as the SOS Bus and Ask for Angela.

The new camera being installed will be the most advanced in Colchester to date. It is a quadhead unit with pan-tilt-zoom capability, offering a 270-degree field of view and 250 metres of 4K night vision.

Cllr David King, Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Strategy, said: “We’re committed to making Colchester a safer place for everyone who lives, works and visits here.

“I promised residents they would see action on the issues of concern for them. This new camera will help enforcement and confidence, to help improve behaviours and deter crime and antisocial behaviour.

“I am grateful for the continued support of and funding from the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner. This is another step forward in keeping our city safe. We very much look forward to continued collaboration with our police partners.”

The new cameras will join several others already in place on North Station Road. Installed by our partners Colchester Amphora and Colchester Fibre, these cameras support public safety and help the council and its partners respond to various types of crime. Whether it’s fly-tipping, antisocial behaviour or traffic-related incidents, the high-tech cameras will play an important role in detecting and reducing criminal activity.
