The Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Lesley Scott-Boutell, will lead this year’s St George’s Day civic celebrations on Sunday, 27 April.
The day begins with a service at 10.30am at St Botolph’s Church, conducted by Reverend Emma Smith, Curate at St. Botolph’s. She will be joined by the Bishop of Colchester, the Right Reverend Roger Morris, and Revd Gavin Smith CF, Senior Chaplain 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team.
A number of civic and military guests will attend, including the Lord-Lieutenant of Essex, Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst; the High Sheriff of Essex, Julie Fosh; Colchester Garrison Commander, Lt Col Ed Rankin; High Steward of Colchester, Sir Bob Russell; members of Colchester City Council, and other dignitaries. The Mayor, the Lord-Lieutenant and the Garrison Commander will give readings during the service.
Invitations have also been extended to family members and partners of those in the procession, alongside local community representatives.
After the church service, the Mayor will return to the Town Hall to take the salute as uniformed youth groups march through the city centre to Castle Park. Groups taking part include Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers. The Mayor will then join them in Castle Park for a special gathering to mark the occasion.
Cllr Lesley Scott-Boutell, Mayor of Colchester, said: “This St George’s Day, we celebrate more than heritage – we celebrate each other. Colchester is built on the strength of its community, and I’m proud to lead an event that brings people of all ages and backgrounds together in a shared spirit of belonging.
“St George’s Day is a time to reflect on the values we share – compassion, care, and community – and to recognise the many people who make Colchester such a strong and welcoming place.
“This year, I’m especially focused on how we can build greater understanding and respect between us all. Celebrating together reminds us that tradition and unity go hand in hand – and that everyone has a place in Colchester’s story.”
