Following Colchester’s recognition as the first Compassionate City in the East of England, the community is encouraged to come together to celebrate local champions of kindness.
The Compassionate Community Champions awards honour individuals, groups, and organisations that make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing challenges such as serious illness, ageing, caregiving, and loss.
The Mayor of Colchester, Councillor Lesley Scott-Boutell, presided over the first-ever presentation of the Compassionate Community Champions awards at the Town Hall on 3 October 2024. Gemma Boud nominated Prettygate School for the Compassionate Place Award in recognition of the love and support her family received during their difficult time.
Gemma said: “I am nominating Prettygate School for their outstanding support during my husband’s battle with lymphoma. The entire team assisted us through his transition to hospice care and my daughters’ part-time schooling. Even after his passing, they provided a safe, welcoming environment, allowing time off for grief – a space where Evie and Ava could feel safe, supported, and loved.
“This nomination is a heartfelt expression of our family’s gratitude for the incredible love and support we received. It reflects the strength and unity of our community in times of need. We are deeply thankful to everyone at the school for making such a positive difference in Evie and Ava’s lives and would like to encourage others to nominate their own Compassionate Champions.”
Now, as preparations begin for the next awards in January 2025, we invite residents of Colchester to continue celebrating compassion in action by nominating their own Compassionate Champions.
The Mayor of Colchester, Councillor Lesley Scott-Boutell said: “Whether it’s a caring neighbour, a thoughtful project, or a supportive business, these champions of kindness make Colchester a better place for everyone. This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge those who embody compassion in our community."
