Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)

Some of our roles may require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. If a DBS check is required, you will also have to register with the DBS update service.

The DBS update service ensures all registered DBS certificates are kept up to date and allows authorised parties to view the status of your certificate. This is an annual subscription and you will be responsible for ensuring this is maintained.

The Disclosure and Barring Service is a non-departmental public body of the Home Office.

The DBS enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially involving children or vulnerable adults, and provides wider access to criminal record information through its disclosure service for England and Wales.

The Council has a strict policy on the handling of DBS certificate information.

We also have a written policy on recruiting ex-offenders.

Please note that where a DBS check is required, we are legally unable to make an offer of employment until the check has been cleared.
