The Hythe Task Force met on 22 January to advance its work on tackling long-standing flooding issues on Haven Road caused by tidal water ingress from the River Colne. This multi-agency group, which includes representatives from local councils, residents, and key stakeholders, is committed to addressing the persistent challenges posed by flooding in the area.
A key highlight of the meeting was the announcement that a vital water outlet valve replacement, long awaited by the community, has now been procured. With access for installation being finalised, the valve is set to be fitted in early March. This milestone marks a significant step forward in improving the area’s flood resilience.
The Task Force also addressed concerns about road safety and disruption during flood events. Plans for new flood warning signs and sensors on Haven Road were discussed, with members emphasising the urgency of securing appropriate sites for sensor installation. The Task Force called for swift action to resolve this issue and ensure the new warning system can be implemented without further delays.
Anglian Water provided an update on their investigations into eight key outlets and valves that manage surface water drainage in the area. Their efforts, alongside those of Essex County Council, to consolidate studies, reviews, and data on the issue were praised. These collaborative efforts will form the foundation for a forthcoming bid for flood relief funding, which is essential to further mitigation efforts.
Cllr David King, Chairman of the Hythe Task Force, expressed optimism about the progress being made, stating: “I am encouraged that we are now making long overdue progress. My thanks to Anglian Water and other partners for their support, and to local councillors and residents for their patience. This is a complex, multi-agency effort, and we have lots to do yet. But for the first time, we are starting to see how we might together find a way ahead to reduce flood risks, which will benefit the entire community.”
The Hythe Task Force will continue to meet regularly to oversee ongoing efforts and ensure momentum is maintained. Updates on key milestones and project progress will be shared with the community as they develop.
