This October, Colchester Castle invites you to explore the eerie and the unexplained through a series of events that delve deep into its dark past. With over 2,000 years of history, the castle offers the perfect backdrop for these spine-chilling experiences.

X Trials – A criminal history of Colchester Castle
Date: 19 October 7-9pm
Over 1,000 years, Colchester Castle has been a Roman temple, medieval fortress, gaol, and Victorian prison, housing criminals from pirates to witches—and even a vicar caught illegally fishing. Its dark history makes it the perfect place to explore bizarre legal cases driven by beliefs in strange creatures like aliens and zombies.
Join barrister and ghost-enthusiast Naomi Ryan as she uncovers where the paranormal meets the law, with tales of witches leaking war secrets, ghosts solving murders, and Witchfinders spreading terror.
 
An evening of Samhain
Date: 31 October, 7-10pm
Join us for an evening of dark history, witchcraft, and magick. Listen to talks about the darker side of Colchester’s history, the origins of Samhain, and current magickal practices. Enjoy a variety of interactive activities related to the craft and receive a themed refreshment break.
 
Explore the Unexplained
Date: 2 November 7pm-midnight
Uncover the haunted history of Colchester with experts in paranormal phenomena. From ghost sightings to unexplained events, this evening promises to reveal the darker side of the town’s folklore.
