Dog lovers warned about unlicensed breeders

Dog lovers in Colchester are being reminded of the importance of buying from licensed breeders when looking to purchase a dog or puppy.

Greed breeding, where breeders prioritise profit over the welfare of their dogs, is a growing concern across the UK. Colchester City Council’s Licensing Team urges buyers to be cautious when purchasing a dog due to this issue. Sellers offering a litter of puppies must have a valid licence and licence number if they have sold more than three litters; if they don’t have a licence, buyers should be wary and consider avoiding that seller.

Registered breeders are listed on the council website here, where buyers can find details of all local breeders, including licence numbers. If you're searching for a puppy outside Colchester, be sure the breeder is registered with their local council. Purchasers are otherwise advised to avoid selling sites and instead check the Kennel Clubs websites for breeders, as they must meet specific welfare standards for their dogs.

Colchester City Council’s Animal Licensing Officer said: “If you are thinking of breeding dogs, please contact our team for information and advice to make sure you're doing everything properly, and all the appropriate testing has taken place so that the prospective pups have less risk of complaints such as hip dysplasia, ear and eye problems and skin issues.

We’d like to remind buyers of the commitment needed to own a dog: Are you prepared to care for a dog for up to 15 years? Can you handle the challenges of raising a puppy, including toilet training, chewing, potential separation anxiety, and the significant costs like spaying/neutering, insurance, vet bills, and food? The expenses are substantial, and potential buyers should carefully consider these factors before making a decision.”

Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage and Public Protection, added: “Education is of utmost importance regarding animal welfare and, in this case, dog breeding. We hope that by highlighting the issue, more residents understand why buying from a licensed breeder is so important.
“We also hope that all new dog-owners enjoy the benefits of their new four-legged friends! With responsible ownership they are wonderful companions.”
