The Mayor of Colchester invites residents to join her for a special flag-raising ceremony at the Town Hall to commemorate Merchant Navy Day on Tuesday, 3 September 2024.
The ceremony will begin at 11am and will feature the raising of the Merchant Navy flag, the Red Ensign, to honour the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve in the Merchant Navy. This important day recognises their vital role in ensuring the UK's maritime trade and security.
The Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Lesley Scott-Boutell, will be present to lead the ceremony and deliver a heartfelt address. The Mayor will highlight the sacrifices made by Merchant Navy personnel throughout history, particularly during World War II, when they braved treacherous conditions to keep Britain supplied with essential goods and resources.
“The Merchant Navy has played an indispensable role in our nation's history," said Mayor Lesley Scott- Boutell. “Their courage and dedication have ensured our prosperity and security. It is our duty to honour their service and remember the sacrifices they have made.”
Residents are encouraged to attend the flag-raising ceremony and show their support for the Merchant Navy.
