Colchester's long-standing commitment to public safety, crime prevention, and community engagement was celebrated at the Crime and Disorder Committee meeting on 11 March, where Grahame Stehle was presented with two hard-earned awards in recognition of his service.
Grahame was honoured with the High Sheriff Award for Essex and the Mayoral Award by Colchester City Council, for his leadership and dedication to improving safety. His contributions span more than two decades and have made a significant impact on crime prevention, civic improvement, and public service.
The High Sheriff Award is one of Essex's most esteemed honours, recognising individuals who have made outstanding contributions to crime prevention, public safety, and community resilience. Grahame’s leadership as Chairperson of the Colchester District Neighbourhood Watch since 2014 has been pivotal. With his help and guidance, crime rates have dropped by 52% since 2019, and public engagement in crime prevention initiatives has increased.
Grahame has expanded the Neighbourhood Watch scheme to 93 areas, encompassing over 3,300 members. His personal career involved consulting on security projects for large organisations and as such he has been able provide advice on home security, fraud awareness and give up-to-date crime alerts to the community.
The Mayoral Award recognises significant contributions to the city’s development and civic engagement. Over the past 15 years, Grahame has played a key role in the Great Horkesley community, particularly as Secretary of the Aldercar Wood Neighbourhood Watch. He has also helped organise local events, including the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and the opening of the Great Horkesley Village Hall.
The Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Lesley Scott-Boutell, said: “Both the High Sheriff Award and Mayoral Award highlight Grahame Stehle’s unwavering commitment to the public. His vision, leadership, and dedication have not only improved crime prevention efforts but have also encouraged partnerships between local authorities, police, and the community.
“As the Mayor of Colchester, I am proud to honour individuals like Grahame, whose selfless contributions continue to shape our city. His service stands as an inspiration to us all.”
Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage and Public Protection, said: “All I can say is, ‘wow!’ Grahame’s work ethic is an inspiration, and it goes to show how much one individual can make a difference in a community. It's clear he is always ready to help, offer advice, or step up when needed, and his dedication doesn’t go unnoticed. Colchester is a better place because of his work, and we’re lucky to have him leading the way in so many areas. Thank you, Grahame.”
