On Friday 11 October 2024, Colchester Cemetery’s new extension became home to two majestic Redwood trees, donated in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Colchester Medical Society. This generous gift, provided by Essex-based Redwood enthusiast Ron Levy, holds deep significance for both the crematorium and the community it serves.

Ron Levy, who grew these giant Redwoods from seed, originally planted them to mark the birth of his grandchildren. Now, through his thoughtful donation, these towering trees will also serve as a tribute to the dedicated healthcare professionals who have tirelessly supported the people of Colchester.

The Sequoia semperviren honours those in primary care, and the Metasequoia glyptostroboides represents those in secondary care, both vital to the health and well-being of the community. Planted at a distance that allows them to grow to their full potential, these two trees will stand side-by-side – symbolising the unity and common purpose of healthcare teams working together for the greater good.

The choice of Redwoods was particularly meaningful for the Colchester Medical Society. Known for their thick bark, these trees reflect the society's emblem, the Rhino, which represents the resilience and "thick skin" required by medical professionals in their challenging roles. The crematorium is honoured to host these symbolic trees, which will grow to be a lasting memorial to the strength and care that healthcare workers provide every day.

This meaningful contribution to the cemetery’s landscape also aligns with the society’s broader commitment to environmental awareness. In another project tied to their 250th anniversary, the society commissioned a unique Redwood carving of a Rhino by renowned chainsaw artist Danny Thomas. The half-tonne carving now resides at Colchester Zoo, further emphasising the society’s support for both healthcare and environmental preservation.

Cllr Natalie Sommers, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Heritage, and Public Protection said: “We are deeply grateful to the Colchester Medical Society for this meaningful gift. Colchester Cemetery and Crematorium are proud to be part of this historic milestone, as these trees will serve as a lasting legacy – standing tall and strong, just like the healthcare professionals they represent.”

These Redwood trees will stand as a lasting tribute to the dedication of our healthcare professionals and enrich our community for generations to come.
