PUBLISHED: 30 April 2024

As the familiar colours of spring begin to bloom around us, many of us will begin preparing our gardens for the sunnier weather that lies ahead. With this, comes unwanted garden waste. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or complete novice, Colchester City Council’s Garden Waste collection service can make disposing of this waste simple and convenient.

For a one-off joining fee of just £35 per bin and an annual service fee of £55 per bin, you can access kerbside collections that provide hassle-free recycling. And if you want to share a bin with a neighbour you can halve the cost.

With the service, you'll benefit from convenient fortnightly pick-ups throughout the year (with a two week break over Christmas) allowing you to focus on nurturing your garden without the added stress and time taken out to book and then visit the recycling centre. From lawn clippings to pruned branches, the service will take care of it all, leaving you to enjoy your gardens and outdoor spaces.

For residents not wishing to sign up to the service you can dispose of your garden waste at home by composting it or booking a slot online and taking it to the nearest Essex County Council Recycling Centre. Residents can also purchase discounted compost bins through Love Essex as well as take part in a free online composting course, whether they purchase a compost bin or not.

Visit Garden Waste Subscription Service for more information on composting and how to claim your discounted compost bin.

Cllr David King, Leader of Colchester City Council said: “For residents wishing to sign up, the easiest and quickest way is online with a credit or debit card and details of the property. You’ll then be issued with a brown bin if you do not already have one, or a permit to attach to your existing bin. If anyone needs assistance in registering online, please contact our Customer Services Team for help.”

For further details about the service, including information about financial support available to those in receipt of Local Council Tax Support (LCTS) whilst funding lasts and to sign up please visit - Garden Waste Subscription Service
